Problem of Illiteracy in Rural Communities
Surveys conducted by Uwezo East Africa demonstrated that although ~85% of children are enrolled in Primary school, “the quality of learning is low [since] Less than a third of children enrolled in Grade 3 have basic Grade 2 level literacy and numeracy skills“. They further state that “The principal finding in this report [released 2013], echoing results from previous years, is that children are not learning. Children are not acquiring foundational skills of literacy and numeracy consistent with the official curricular requirements in their countries.“ – Uwezo.net

OUR CURRENT GOAL IS TO COMPLETE THE CONSTRUCTION OF SUNSEI EDUCATIONAL CENTER
In response to the low literacy rates in her rural community in the Rift Valley, in 2009 Miriam Sei founded Sunsei Educational Center. By using her expertise, Miriam’s goal was to provide an excellent education for the local children.
Sunsei Educational Center is located in the rural highlands of Kipkabus in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. After completing the construction of the first classroom and two latrines, the inaugural class of ~10 children were enrolled at Sunsei Educational Center. The goal was to construct one classroom each year to make room for incoming students. However, in 2011 Miriam became critically ill and was unable to continue with the construction.
Nevertheless, as a result of the excellent education at Sunsei, children kept enrolling at the school. Currently Sunsei Education Center has 65 students from Pre-K through 8th grade with 11 teachers and staff. At the beginning of 2015, construction began. So far, we have built 4 brick classrooms, 2 temporary classrooms, and 6 brick latrines. We are currently in the process of completing a science laboratory. All thanks to our financial sponsors.
Despite the humble conditions of the school, the students of Sunsei Educational Center were ranked first academically in their location in English, Math, Swahili, Social Sciences, Religious Education, and Science.
The next phase is to finish the construction of the brick classrooms, then begin building dining facilities, computer lab/creative space, play ground, and furnish the school with desks/chairs and learning materials (budget below).
Budget For Completion of Sunsei Educational Center
4 Brick Classrooms = $14,000
6 Brick Latrines = $2,000

Creative Space/Computer lab = $3,000
Play Ground = $1,000
